Jan Hendrix (The Netherlands, b 1949)

Based in Mexico City, Dutch artist Jan Hendrix was born in Maasbree in 1949.  He began his studies in 1968 at the progressive Ateliers 63 in Haarlem (now De Ateliers).  On the recommendation of the Japanese artist Shinkichi Tajiri, he continued his master’s degree at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht, where he focused on film, photography, and graphic art.

During this period, Hendrix established a strong link of exchange and communication with a group of artists in Düsseldorf, which worked as a think-tank, and involved, Beuys, Richter, Spoerri, the Becher couple, Kiefer, Lupertz, Filliou, Nam June Paik and Dieter Roth, among other artists.  They would influence Hendrix’s postgraduate activities and projects, broaden his codes of production, and ultimately lead him to choose paper and ink as his primary media.

Hendrix lived in France, Portugal, Norway, and Ireland before settling in Mexico in the late 1970’s.  Since his arrival, he has become a key figure in the Mexican contemporary art scene and has received the Order of the Aztec Eagle for his contributions to art and architecture in the country.  His artistic practice has evolved to include wide ranging mediums including books, print editions, enamel installations, etched glass, paintings, set design and architectural projects.

Hendrix has created large-scale public installations and exhibited his work in numerous international exhibitions throughout Mexico, Europe, Indonesia, China, Australia, Kenya and the United States.  His work can be found in prominent collections, including the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France; the Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca, Mexico; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Holland; and the Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, Ireland.
